What kind of language is this?

Papiamento is the common spoken language on the Caribbean islands Aruba and Netherlands Antilles. They are part of the kingdom of the Netherlands, so Dutch is the official language, but Papiamento is more common. This language consist of several influences from Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and English.

I see.....well, I thought, that it must be quite an exotic language. By the way, I remember I´ve been reading an article once about the so called "ABC-islands". It´s said, that you have a mixture between carribean flair and dutch traditions there. Have you ever been travelling to one of those islands?

Yes, I have been to Aruba and it's true. For example, some Dutch holidays are celebrated there. The mixture is also visually noticable. Especially in the capital Oranjestad, there are a lot of buildings with fronts in Dutch style, but painted in bright colors. Very pretty.

ik dacht dat je belgisch was.

I've never been to the carribeans, but I'm from the west of holland and lots of antillians live here. Papiamento or papiamentu is a portugese creole language. there are theories it's a spanish creole. They speak it a lot. When i studied there were lots antillians in my year. the islands arent'big enough for a university so they come here, because the islands are a part of our kingdom. Antillians are creoles with a lot of portugese and dutch blood in them.

Well, I can write someething in French, but that would only be something like;
Je m'appelle Tim and Je ne comprend pas.

However I can make myself understandable in French when I just speak to people. I love to speak to people from other countries when I am on vacation, to just test my language skills a bit.

The other languages are easier to understand and write. English, just because it's the world second language and German because it looks like Dutch.

The good thing here is that while understanding foreign languages is nature's gift, grammatical competence is a highly learned art. I mainly speak and write Spanglish (read weird mix of Spanish and English)

Then I can speak and write a bit of:
Portuñol (Portuguese mixed with Spanish)
Itañol (Italian mixed with Spanish)
Franceñol (French mixed with Spanish)
and........... Lunfardo!
